Day --

Hi class,

I waited in the classroom for fifteen minutes after school ended, but no one showed-up. If you have any questions, you can email me anytime before 10 pm.

As a reminder, the Midterm will consist of questions only from the Midterm Review Sheet and Homework 24. There will be matching and multiple choice questions. All definition are matching, but don't forget to study the definitions on Homework 24.

Please bring me your calculator fifteen minutes before the exam. If you do not bring me your calculator before the exam. Checking your calculator will cut into your exam time.

Good Luck!

Hi class,

The most effective way to study for the exam is to rework the last three quizzes and the homework on periodic trends. If you encounter trouble areas on the quizzes, refer back to the lecture slides and rework homework problems. If you have trouble with the homework on periodic trends, I can send you more problems to work for practice. If you have any questions about the exam, feel free to send me an email at mairaqayyum@gmail.com.

These are the topics that you need to know for the exam on Tuesday:

·      Law of Conservation of Mass
·      Electronic Charge
·      Nuclear Model of the Atom
·      Atomic number, mass number, atomic mass
·      Speed of Light
·      Electromagnetic Wave Relationship (speed of light = wavelength times frequency)
·      Electromagnetic Spectrum
·      Energy of a Quantum/Photon
·      Bohr’s Model of the Atom
·      Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle
·      Quantum Mechanical Model

Friday, November 1, 2013

Day 55

Hi class,

The homework due Monday includes problems 4 and 5 on page 181, problems 21-25 on page 160, problems 26-28 on page 162, and problems 8-10 on page 186. For problem 21, please provide the electron configuration, the energy/orbital diagram, and the number of unpaired electrons for each element.

For problems 8 and 9, use the following information that wasn't covered in class. Generally, the valence electrons are the electrons that are not in the noble-gas core when writing the condensed configuration for the element. Exceptions: If the element is in the s or p-block, do not count electrons in the d or f block as valence electrons. If the element is in the d block, do not count electrons in the f block as valence electrons. Examples: Bromine has seven valence electrons. (You should already know this because group 17 elements have seven valence electrons.) Iridium has nine valence electrons.

The quiz will be on Wednesday.

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Day 7

Hi class,

For class on Monday, please read chapter 2 section 2. Since one student in the class still doesn't have a textbook, the textbook pages are located at the end of this post. Fifth period seemed to struggle with the concepts presented today, so I recommend that the students in that section reread chapter 2 section 1 before reading chapter 2 section 2. I will try to clarify section 1 on Monday before starting section 2. Students in both sections should make sure they know the seven SI base units and the nine SI prefixes from class. Also, I didn't have enough time to show the video about the scale of the universe during fifth period, but here is a link to an interactive scale of the universe.

The homework for chapter 2 section 1 are practice problems 1-3 on page 38 and problems 1 and 2 under the label "section 1" on page 977. Before beginning the homework for this section, make sure you understand the example problem on page 38. All homework for chapter 2 will be due on Thursday, August 29. You need to show all your work on the homework problems.

The distribution and key for the first quiz are posted below. As a reminder, if you have any questions about the quiz, I will be in the library during lunch on Monday. DO NOT MISPLACE YOUR QUIZZES!!! Edline should be up and running on Monday.

Grade Distribution for Quiz 1
100+ (A) 7 students
94-99 (A) 5 students
85-93 (B) 6 students

If you must leave class early, you are responsible for getting notes on the material you missed from another student.

Looking forward, there will be a quiz on chapter 1 on Thursday, and I will review all the material up to that point on Wednesday in preparation for the quiz.
